On the Ukrainian side, more than 1400 stubborn villagers remained or returned without authorization, after they had been evacuated, to live in the contaminated villages within the 30km "no-go" zone. An inhabitant fishes on the river Pripyat, a tributary of the Dniepr that flows across the 30km forbidden zone around the Chernobyl site. Despite the high degree of cesium-137 contained in fish and game, inhabitants still continue to fish and hunt in order to eat. Happily, the radionuclides accumulate in the fish bones.
